Reindeer in Finland have set out to break free from the tradition of simply pulling Santa’s sleigh by demonstrating their speed and agility in the Reindeer King’s Cup Championships.
This demanding series of events provides the perfect opportunity for reindeer and their drivers to prove their sporting prowess. Taking place over two days, events are designed to showcase a reindeer’s skill in track racing over short and long distance.
The unquestionable climax of the competition comes from the Championship Race on Sunday 29 March 2015. In this thrilling 2000 metre event, reindeer pull drivers on skis around a snow-covered track for a chance to be crowned the winner and champion. Weighing up to 110 kilograms, reindeer need to be at their peak physical fitness to reach the top speeds of 80 kilometres per hour with drivers kitted out in the latest aerodynamic technology.
“Reindeer have always been an important part of life in Finland and the Sámi culture. The Reindeer King’s Cup Championship is a great opportunity for Finland to show the whole world that a reindeer is not just for Christmas.” Eva Kiviranta, Communications Coordinator, Visit Finland.
Tickets to watch the captivating events taking place from 28 to 29 March 2015 in Inari, Finland, cost €6 a day for adults and are free for children under 12 years. This fascinating area in northern Finland still finds a large influence from the Sámi culture and this thrilling event reinforces reindeer as being part of the fabric of the nation.
Already receiving huge support from the Nordic countries, this unconventional event is set to be a highlight of the sporting calendar as reindeer receive international recognition.
