Top of the rock
In February 2016 Eden Rock - St Barths will launch a new level of accommodation located at the very pinnacle of the hotel on the ‘top of the rock’. The 200 square metre Christopher Columbus Suite is located at the most impressive part of the hotel. It is perched upon the famous rocky promontory that splits the white sands of St Jean Bay in half and is one of the Caribbean’s most iconic vistas. With a spectacular cliff-edge positioning, it has the best views in the house over the sea and the beautiful island of St Barths behind. The Christopher Columbus Suite is the latest jewel to be added to an already sparkling crown and joins the likes of Hotel Eden Rock – St Barths’ legendary Villa Rockstar and Villa Nina as some of the most special hotel accommodation in the Caribbean.
Christopher Columbus & Baie de St. Jean
The Christopher Columbus Suite is so named because it overlooks the stretch of ocean on which Christopher Columbus sailed when he first discovered the island of St Barthelemy, naming it after his brother Bartholomew. Guests can soak in panoramic views over these turquoise waters from sun loungers dotted along the suite’s spacious wrap-around terrace.
A personal design project
Designed by the hotel’s owners David and Jane Mathews, the suite has been a labour of love taking two years and considerable investment. The space itself is very close to their hearts – in 1994, 500 years after Christopher Columbus first sailed past the iconic rock on his voyage of discovery, David and Jane were sailing in the same waters. Upon dropping anchor and seeing the rock at sunset they fell instantly in love with the property, bought it and moved with their family to St. Barths one year later.
Jane’s fine creative touch and passion for quality craftsmanship is evident in the use of handpicked materials such as solid oak flooring, the finest Carrera marble and a freestanding Agape bathtub by Benedini Associati made entirely out of white Exmer. Contemporary designer furniture from the likes of Antonio Cittero, Patricia Urquiola and Rodolfo Dordoni was selected by Jane and the Eden Rock - St Barths creative team. Marking the beginning of a new in-suite rotating exhibition programme, cutting edge art from international artists has been thoughtfully placed throughout the suite’s roomy double bedroom and spacious living area. The suite has a state-of-the-art entertainment system and custom-made bar stocked with the finest wines and spirits.
Romancing on the rocks
Offering some of the most magical views in The Caribbean, total privacy and clever design touches such as a stand-alone bath in the living room, the Christopher Columbus Suite is perfectly suited to romantics and honeymooners. The largest one bedroom suite on the island of St. Barths, it is unusually roomy and ideal for couples looking for the ultimate in Caribbean luxury.
Creating a super suite
For families or larger groups, the Christopher Columbus Suite can connect with the Howard Hughes Loft, Greta Garbo Suite and De Haenen Suite to offer a four bedroomed suite, forming a totally private villa on top of the rock.
The Christopher Columbus Suite opens in February 2016 and starts from €4,000 per night on a b&b basis.
