The world is mad for Moomins, and to coincide with the release of the latest film, Moomins on the Riviera at cinemas across the UK, here’s a look at family adventures in the Moomins’ homeland, Finland. This summer discover the plethora of Moomin activities across Finland from theme parks to cultural tours and exploring the Finnish countryside.
Kids will love discovering Moominworld, a theme park which combines Moomin passion with archipelago activities. Moominworld opens its gates for the summer season on 6 June; the unique island boasts a wealth of activities for a magical and enchanting family holiday. Spend time with Moominpappa on his boat, meet friends at The Moominhouse and even join Snufkin singing songs around the campfire. Children can also try their hand at rock climbing, archery and panning for gold.
After an action packed day at Moominworld, guests can continue their Moomin adventure at the Naantali Spa, which has a selection of family Moomin Story Rooms. These rooms have been designed with Moomin fans in mind, features include Moomin Valley bed linen, towels and crockery. For breakfast guests can even enjoy Moominmamma’s pancakes with raspberry jam.
Since Tove Jansson first began drawing the Moomins in the early 1940s, the white fairy tale creatures have become an iconic part of childhood for children across the world. Moominvalley at Tampere Art Museum has a collection of 2,000 pieces of Janson’s original artworks for Moomin enthusiasts to explore. A highlight at the museum is a blue five-storey Moomin Model House sure to delight young children.
For those keen to explore the Finnish archipelago, head to the island of Söderskär. Believed to be the setting of Moominpappa at Sea, Söderskär Island is just two hours from Helsinki by boat. Perfect for day visits, the island is home to a 150 year old lighthouse which stands at 40 metres tall.
Moomins on the Riviera is now out in cinemas across the UK.
